Gadget Class

The people have spoken! They must have Gadget Class!

With all these devices being thrown at us, wouldn’t it be nice to have someone actually show us how to use them? Are we supposed to know this stuff by osmosis or what? (For that matter, nobody ever showed us how to do Taxes either, but that’s another story.)

I will keep the scope of this class fairly broad, as there are a lot of similarities between our various devices. 

I’ll include not just computers, but other devices in the digital ecosystem: Phones, Tablets, Printers, Wearables, etc. My aim is to help put it all together, and show how to accomplish basic tasks.

While I will demonstrate on the Mac, I will try to keep things somewhat ‘platform agnostic’, so I can include folks on Windows, Android, etc. 

The first Gadget Class will be Tuesday June 21st,
 6:30 - 8:30 PM at Belding Library in Ashfield.

The price for this 2-hour class is $35. If you have any questions, please ask away. My plan is that this class will be the start of a continuing series. But the only way to guarantee that is if I can fill seats. So let me know if you are interested, but can’t make this particular class.

Another Reason to Update to El Capitan: Security

The Mac is not immune from all nefarious exploits that are out there on the internets (yeah, I said internets). But it is by far the most secure popular operating system out there. 

The best way to keep on top of things is to keep your Mac updated to the latest system (10.11.4 as of this writing). There are built-in security updates that help keep your Mac more secure.

This won’t keep everything and anything out there from wreaking havoc with your system, but it will go a long way! Update to El Capitan, and then continue to let the Apple software updates do their thing.

I was saying in the last newsletter that I was expecting new Macs to be coming out in June at the annual Developers Conference. Well one has come out even sooner that that!

Apple has just introduced an updated MacBook. The MacBook is their entry-level laptop. Its focus is on portability rather than power. To make it thinner, last year they introduced the USB-C port, which takes the place of several different ports you used to have on the MacBook. 

It’s a cool machine, but you may have to buy some adapters to connect all your external devices. But isn’t that always the case? So far the new machine looks like it is not a huge update over last year’s model in terms of power. But its got a nice new rose color!

I got rid of my expensive Satellite TV service 2 years ago. I hooked up an old Mac Pro to my 42” TV. I have the major networks in HD, with Surround Sound. With Elgato Eyetv, I can record and pause live TV. Love, Love, Love it!
