Birdwaves Media Animation: The Kim Loo Sisters project
Step 2 > Destination: Photoshop
Since my drawings are too big for my scanner, I photograph my drawings with an 18-megapixel camera (Canon T2i). I bring these photos into the computer and put them on separate layers and align them in Photoshop.

Sometimes I ink the drawings on paper, sometimes I do this in the computer. I have a decent Wacom tablet, but it's not always satisfying to ink that way. You just can't beat Pen/Brush on paper. Sometimes time constraints are the deciding factor.
After Inking comes the coloring. I create new photoshop layers and label them each. Nothing is more irritating than losing track of what is on a given layer.

Step One > Pencil Sketches
The animations all start out as sketches with pencil on paper. This Louie Kiddie Revue sketch is 18" x 24". I worked off a press kit photo taken in the 1920's. For the record, I never trace any of the original photos I use as reference.

Detail:

After I've got my rought pencils done, I decide how many layers I need to create depth in my animation. I decide on 3: one for the characters, one for the mid-ground of the set, and one for the backdrop. Using tracing paper, I transfer my drawing into individual drawings that I then photograph and bring into the computer.
